Board Game News – Magical Game Jumanji Returns

Jumanji

On Thursday the world was introduced to the long-awaited sequel to 1995's adventure phenomenon, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle! Jumanji starred the late Robin Williams and was based on a magical board game, called... wait for it... Jumanji, that unleashed a boy trapped in the magical board game for 26 years. He is released as a grown man and preternatural beasts follow him when two children discover the game.

The new Jumanji sequel has an all-star cast with Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Jack Black and Kevin Hart. Jumanji shows how four high school teenagers, all very different to one another, are transported into a Jumanji video game - a different take than the original. They enter the world of Jumanji as adult avatars and find themselves pursued by jungle creatures and motorcycle assailants, jumping into waterfalls and encountering perilous caves fighting for their lives trying to overcome the odds and escape.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is set to be released at the end of this year on the 20th of December.

Total Recall: The Board Game

Overworld Games have announced their new board game, Total Recall: The Board Game. The new game, as you guessed it, is based on the film Total Recall from 1990 that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as Douglas Quaid - rising up with rebels against a corrupt system.

The game has everyone entering a Rekall dream where you are armed with a gun and a mission, kill the leader of the opposing faction.  The game will play similar to Good Cop, Bad Cop, but with the added ability of people being able to become Rekall scientists.

When you become a Rekall scientist you now have the ability to manipulate the dreams and change the game, even to the point where you can win by yourself.

The Kickstarter for the game will launch in August of this year with a retail release in 2018. Also of note for the Kickstarter is that an NSFW (not safe for work) version will be available for pledging, most likely paying homage to the violence and gore in the source movie.

Fantasy Flight Announcements

Fantasy Flight Games has announced Genesys, a new universal role-playing game that uses custom dice to determine a more nuanced story than simple success and failure.

Players accumulate a dice pool of Ability and Difficulty dice and to succeed, players will need to roll more successes than failures on the dice. However, the dice also have symbols for Advantage and Threat, which represent positive and negative side effects during the challenge.

Additionally, Ability and Difficulty dice can be upgraded to Proficiency and Challenge dice, which add more intense symbols for complete Triumph and utter Despair. Dice pools can be further modified with Boost and Setback dice, which add more Advantage or Threat symbols during the task.

Fantasy Flight Games has also announced an expansion for Runewars Miniatures Game, the Uthuk Y’llan a new army for the game. Known as the Locust Horde, long ago the Uthuk ravaged the land, destroying everything in their path.

Ravos the Everhungry, the army's fearsome leader, is so terrifying that merely being in his presence inflicts one panic token on every enemy during setup.

Additionally, Ravos’ command dial has two melee icons, allowing him to attack either early or late in the round. Finally, the Uthuk bring monstrous beasts known as Spined Threshers, whose claws instil fear and rip the enemy to shreds.

Look out for Genesys and the Uthuk Y'llan in Q4 2017.

Can You Escape?

Asmodee and Space Cowboys are bringing new escape rooms to the popular game, Unlock.

The original game's created an escape room where players had one hour to escape using just a deck of cards using the unique mechanism of card numbering and combining.

Unlock! The House on the Hill: Puts the players in a haunted house with a mysterious Book of the Dead.

Unlock! The Nautilus’ Traps: Players set to escape a submarine at the bottom of the sea during a sea monster attack.

Unlock! The Tonipal’s Treasure: Involves a period hunt for pirate treasure on Tonipal island. However, at the beginning of the game, players have been arrested and imprisoned by the Governor.

Test your wits and escape the room in time to solve three new adventures in the Unlock! series. Look for The House on the HillThe Nautilus’ Traps, and The Tonipal’s Treasure out fourth quarter of 2017!
