Top 5 Tips for Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

ratchet and clank rift apart top tips

I have just come out of the other side of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, the latest PlayStation exclusive from Insomniac Games. I played start to finish with my two boys and it was fantastic. It's bright, beautiful and so much fun. Over the course of a few days, we saw everything the game had to offer, got the elusive platinum trophy and I thought we could share some of our hints and tips to help you on your way to save the galaxy and maybe even snag that platinum yourself.

Tip 1 - Trophy Stuff - Kill All the Grunthors You See and Upgrade Your Void Reactor

This may sound like a weird one but there is a trophy for killing 5 of these colossal beasts and there are only a limited number of spawns. They are big dragon looking things with two horns. As long as you don’t ignore them you will be fine but just a heads up, don’t skip felling the massive beasties and you will save yourself having to do another playthrough just for one little trophy. It's always fun killing big monsters anyway, especially when they look this good!

There is another trophy for returning enemy projectiles using the Void Reactor weapon. I mention this in the tips because you cannot return enemy projectiles until it is upgraded to level 5. So you must use it a fair bit to level it up to get access to this fun, unique trait. Just keep this in mind, I did not use it too much and had to farm enemies at the end of the game. If you use it regularly enough the trophy will pop naturally.

Tip 2 - Search Every Nook and Cranny

Ratchet and Clank is full of secrets, pocket dimensions, armour pieces and collectables. If the game is funnelling you forward, check left and right, check behind crates and in alternate doorways. You never know what you will find and some of the gear you can find may help you on your journey to save the multiverse. Also, all the extra bolts you collect will help buy new, more powerful weapons and the Raritanium will come in handy to upgrade them substantially.

Tip 3 - Upgrade Your Weapons

This may sound obvious but there are two ways to power up your weapons in Ratchet and Clank. Firstly they level up by killing enemies but more importantly, you can use Raritanium to unlock nodes on a skill tree at any Ms. Zurkon store. These upgrade tress improve fire rate, ammo storage and provide a plethora of quirky upgrades. Highlighted, special nodes in the upgrade tree unlock better abilities when you surround them with unlocked nodes. Keep an eye out for those to access some of the more powerful abilities for each weapon.

Tip 4 - Combo Your Weapons Together and Reign Supreme

Some fights in this game get quite insane, especially on the higher difficulties. There are enemies everywhere. If you use your weapons in unison together, you can make short work of massive groups. For example, I like to fire off some of the drone style weapons like the Mr Fungi, which attack enemies for you, then freeze some with them with the Cold Snap, drop a couple of Topiary Sprinklers then go to town with bombs and some of the more powerful weapons. There are many ways to use these weapons in conjunction with each other and I am sure you can come up with some great combos of your own. Just don’t stick to one thing, experiment and have fun!

Tip 5 - You Don’t Need all the Collectables. Have Fun with Golden Bolt Unlocks

How you play Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is up to you, if you do go for the platinum though you do not need all the collectables. You only need 9 CraiggerBears, all the Blizon Crystals, All Spybots (which unlocks the Ryno, one of the games best weapons), all the Zurpstones, 5 glitch challenges, only 5 of the golden bolts, only 3 Lorbs and one of each armour piece type.

Most of this stuff will come naturally while playing but it is nice to know that after playing, if you want to get all the trophies you do not have to scour the whole game looking for everything. You can if you want, I did but that is not what everyone is into. It means the game is much more relaxing and does not take too much of people precious time.

The golden bolts are especially fun, they unlock cheats, skins and many zany goodies for you to play with. I will not spoil them but some of the things you unlock are fabulous. So go out there adventurers, save the multiverse and have fun. We certainly did!
