Warhammer 40k: Expanding Yor Army

expanding your army
expanding your army

You might not be ready for this step yet, but that just means you have more time to consider your options! Expanding your army in Warhammer can take many forms. I'd definitely try and get a few games in first to see what you like and don't like, maybe what strategies you prefer, then you can start browsing the options you have available.

The Golden Rule

Before I continue, I will say that the golden rule still applies. Buy what you think is cool. You're going to have much more fun with models you think are cool, rather than models that have been reported to be the most efficient for your army on some website or another. You do you.

The Sensible Options

However you started your army, if you want to be sensible there are usually a few good options for each army. These will vary, but it will be things like:

  • More 'standard' infantry to build out the core. Always good for taking objectives. Usually one or two types of these units in each faction.
  • Transport for your troops, to keep them safe while they get to where they need to go.
  • Elite units to give your army a little muscle. There will likely be a variety of these kinds of units depending on the army, so pick which you think is the most interesting or works with what you already have.
  • Bikes or tank like units. Not always bikes or tanks depending on the faction, but things like that. This will give you some tougher units that can draw fire off your infantry while they take objectives.

All of these choices will give you a more solid core of your army from which you can experiment.

The Crazy Option

Most armies have some sort of mega model. Maybe more than one. I'm talking  Primarch’s for Space MarinesVoid-Dragon or the Silent King for Necrons, Avatars for Eldar etc. Is it wise to combine your few basic troops with this epic powerhouse? Probably not. Is it fun? Hell yes! If you like the look of the model, I say go for it. I guarantee you'll get a great feeling every time you plonk it down on the table, win or lose.

You Do You

Whatever excites you when expanding your army, roll with it. That might be making a well rounded efficient army, getting that unit that has great lore, or picking that huge model that looks awesome. So long as you're enjoying yourself, that's the main thing.

What am I getting to expand my Votann? Well there are several elites I could pick from, but that’s no fun, I’m going to pick up a Hekaton Land Fortress! A beast of a vehicle that both packs a punch and can transport Votann units to wherever they are needed.
