The Last of Us Part II first released in 2020 on PS4. Fast forward 3 years and this game is getting its first remaster.
Naughty Dog are no strangers to releasing remastered versions of their games after a short period of time. Their reasoning is simple. They want to utilise the PS5’s hardware to make one of their most popular games push the limits.
So, what makes the remaster different from the original?
- No Return: For returning fans of the franchise, this remaster contains a brand-new mode. This mode will have fans testing their mettle as they battle through enemies in a roguelike experience. Players will be able to choose characters, each with their own playstyle, and navigate gauntlets. Players can tackle these head on or use stealth to dispatch the hordes. At the end of a run, you can upload your score and choose upgrades to take into the next fight. For those that enjoyed the multiplayer in the original Last of Us, this mode might just sate your appetite.
- Guitar Free: For those that enjoyed the guitar mini game, this version will include more instruments for players to find and play. This guitar free addition will be compatible with FX pedals for those who want to create and share their unique Last of Us Part II tunes.
- Lost Levels: Naughty Dog are including an uncut version of the game and a look behind the curtain. You will be able to have a look at the levels and sequences which didn’t make it into the game. As these were never finished, they are accompanied by commentary. It’s a deep dive into the world's lore and the studio’s creative process.
- Cast Commentary: Outside of the Lost Levels, players can play the main story with commentary from the voice actors and performance directors. This breaks down each part of the game and what it was like to create.
- Performance: Using PS5 technology, this game will run even better than before. Every graphical element has been tweaked to make the game more immersive. It will play natively in 4K and will use upscaling to make it look 4K in performance mode. All of this won’t impact the loading times. In fact, loading times have been reduced. Making this remastered version smoother in every way.
- DualSense: Like most PS5 releases, this game will be utilising the DualSense. You will be able to enjoy adaptive triggers and haptic feedback as you explore the map.
- Accessibility: This remastered version includes two new accessibility features. Description Audio and Speech to Vibrations. Speech to Vibrations makes use of the DualSense controller, to replicate player speech and tone.
- Bonus Content: Much like the Last of Us Part I, this version will include bonus outfits and weapon skins. This means you can unlock new content to customise your characters as you go through the story. The photo mode also includes swanky features for budding photographers and the Speedrun Mode will be making a comeback. How fast will you be able to beat the game?
For gamers who own the PS4 version, there will be an upgrade price plan. So, you won’t have to pay the full cost of this game again. Instead, you can upgrade your PS4 version and import your save files. For those of you who haven’t played Part II yet, well, this will be the version to buy.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered will be out on January 19th, 2024.
