FIFA 17 release date and first details revealed

EA Sports have released the first trailer and initial details about the upcoming FIFA video game. The company unveiled a 55 second video, the cover stars and a change in game engine technology for the long-running series, along with announcing the FIFA 17 release date.

For the first time in the best-selling franchise, FIFA 17 will be powered by Frostbite, which is the same engine used in EA's other top titles - including Battlefield, Need For Speed and Star Wars Battlefront.

The slogan for the game is that 'Football has Changed' - which has to be a link to the new graphical and physical capabilities of FIFA on the new engine. In a press release, EA said the following about the upgrade in engine:

"Frostbite delivers authentic, true-to-life action, takes players to new football worlds and introduces fans to characters full of depth and emotion."

This can only be great news for the franchise but lets face it, die-hard fans would buy FIFA 17 no matter what the updates were. That's what we do - we upgrade our FIFA games each and every year.

EA Sports also unveiled four new ambassadors for the series in Manchester United's Antony Martial, Chelsea's Eden Hazard, Dortmund's Marco Reus and Real Madrid's James Rodriguez. These four top players are scheduled to appear on the cover of the game - replacing Lionel Messi, who has appeared on the last four installments.

FIFA 17 Reveal Trailer

"People say football never changes." That's the message we are shown at the beginning of the reveal trailer. Seconds later we are taken through a montage of FIFA games, from the very first game all the way through to last year's edition.

A response of "We see differently" is shown on screen before we are treated to shots of cover stars Martial, Hazard, Reus and  Rodriguez showing off their skills. The next messaged we see is the "Football has changed" slogan before we are shown the players helping to develop the game.

The Frostbite logo is revealed right before we see a in-game version of Hazard raising his head - and wow does the Chelsea player look realistic! This game could easily be the best-looking FIFA ever-made.

This teaser also stated that the first full reveal of FIFA 17 will be unleashed on June 12 - during EA's Pre-E3 event, EA Play.

Release Information

FIFA 17 will be released here in the UK on September 29 - two days after the North American release. The Frostbite engine will be included on the PS4, Xbox One and PC versions of the game. The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will use the regular FIFA engine.

Gamers will be able to purchase a standard and Deluxe edition of the game. The latter includes the following features:

  • 20 FIFA Ultimate Team Jumbo Premium Gold Packs
  • 3-Match FUT Team of the Week  loan player
  • 8-Match FUT loan item of Hazard, Martial, Reus or Rodriguez
  • Custom FUT Kits created by designers or FIFA soundtrack artists
