Video Game News January 2023

video game news hogwarts

Hello and welcome to the first videogame round-up of 2023! January just flew by, like a F-100D dropping napalm. Let’s never speak of it again and, if you can, pretend it never happened. Onwards to videogames!

I’m currently playing: On Switch Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While on PlayStation 5 I’ve been hiding in my Oodie playing Dead Space.

I’m currently hyped for: Octopath Traveller II on Switch is set to be my next time sink. While on PlayStation 5 the Resident Evil 4 REmake still tickles my pickle.

New Games

The start of January saw the release of Dragon Ball Z Kakarot (PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Switch) and One Piece Odyssey (PS4 PS5, Xbox Series X|S), Fire Emblem Engage (Switch) and the Danganronpa Trilogy (PS4). And then the month ended strong with Forspoken (PS5) and the long-awaited Dead Space remake (PS5).

February starts off with Hogwarts Legacy (PS5) on the 10th. While on the 14th things get romantics with Wanted: Dead (PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S). The mind-bogglingly named Theatrhythm Final Bar Line (Switch) comes out on the 16th. The 17th see’s the release of Wild Hearts (PS5). The 21st will see the release of Like a Dragon! Ishin! (PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S) and Atomic Heart (PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S). Chef Life and Truck Driver both hit all consoles on the 23rd. The Switch gets a heavy-hitter in the form of Octopath Traveller II on the 24th. Clive ‘n’ Wrench (PS4, PS5, Swtich) and Scars Above (PS5) round things out on the 28th.

Announcements

News for January had one big theme - depressing. The biggest shock was the actress Annie Wersching, who played Tess in The Last of Us passing away from cancer at the age of 45. 343 Industries sacked a bunch of teams who worked on Halo Infinite and Hasbro laid off 15% of it’s staff. Destiny 2 went completely offline after a hotfix ended up deleting items and triumphs for many players. And Mass Effect veteran Mac Walters left BioWare after 19 years.

But there were little glimmers of hope dotted around the month. The Last of Us TV show is great and is breaking all sorts of viewing records for HBO. Call of Duty Modern Warfare finally got its Hardcore mode for season 2, and the Google Stadia finally gave up the ghost - physical games forever!!

And That’s, That
