Anything You Can Do, Better
“Please, this isn’t even the craziest thing I’ve done today!” - Winifred Habbamock, Arkham Horror.
Meet Winifred Habbamock, the rogue risktaker who’s known for going all in. Making up one of the five Arkham horror: Premade Investigator Starter Packs, she is designed with beginners in mind. But fear not, she’s no newbie to this mythos malarkey!
Much like her attitude, this premade deck is made for going all in on skill tests. And considering that her intellect and Combat skills are both at 3 each, you can go into either test knowing that you have a good chance of coming out the other side unscathed.
As with the other premade investigator packs, fantasy flight games provide you with everything you need to start playing a campaign. Including upgrades for your deck to switch out as you progress. This makes it the perfect companion for someone who’s new to the game, or just wants to join an event on a whim. Just remember, unless you’re joining someone who already has a core set, you’ll need to pick one up to be able to put this deck into action.
Opportunist
Much like the other 4 investigator starter decks, you are provided with a pre-made deck of 34 cards that can be used to jump straight into the action. In addition, you also get 26 upgrade cards to use as you progress through any campaign. A plus side to having a variety of upgrade cards, is that you have the freedom to personalize your deck to a play style that suits you.
In addition to the deck of cards, you also receive a small booklet that gives you a fantastic introduction to Winifred Habbamock and her unique playstyle. This is especially helpful for new players as it explains the benefit of certain cards, and what to keep an eye out for in your opening hand.
Streetwise
One benefit of these premade decks is that they’re oozing with combo potential. Over Succeeding is a must with this deck and is encouraged by cards such as ‘Mauser C96’ and ‘Switchblade’. Go big or go home is Winifred Habbamock’s motto, and you shouldn’t commit any less than two cards to any skill tests.
I can’t go any further without highlighting just how good Winifred’s ability and elder sign trait are. Her ability allows you to draw a card if you commit 2 different non-weakness cards to a skill test. Which means that you should be committing 2 to each and every test that you take, to ensure you get the most value out of it.
In addition, her elder sign trait allows you to return a card you committed to a skill test for every 2 points that you succeed by. This is a really juicy trait when combined with your ability, and allows you to power through your deck multiple times in a scenario.
That being said, I feel that this deck would benefit from a couple of cards that increase your hand size. That way, you could really utilize the ability card draw without having to discard any winning cards from your hand before you can play them.
Daring Manoeuvre
If you’re looking to get a taste of what Arkham Horror has to offer, and want a fun companion to show you round, Winifred is your girl. It offers a great introduction to how you can use skill tests to your advantage. Furthermore, you can get stuck into combat or investigating and have great fun doing it.
I enjoyed myself immensely when playing this deck, and quickly added a few cards from my collection to buff the hand size and get more bang for my buck from over succeeding. Once I had, I found myself powering through campaign scenarios and laying waste to anything in my way. Also, if you’re unsure of where to go next with this deck, there are a large number of community decks for Winifred Habbamock that demonstrate what she’s truly capable of.
But don’t limit yourself to just one deck. After all, there are four more investigator starter decks to have a go at. Each one focusing on a different playstyle, and demonstrating what certain combos can achieve in the right hands. Arkham Horror really is a realm of endless possibilities.
So why not pick up the Winifred Habbamock starter deck today and get stuck into the action today!
