Adepta Sororitas Combat Patrol Review

Who Are The Adepta Sororitas?

Nuns with guns! What’s not to like? Adepta Sororitas, or Sisters of Battle are the military wing of the Ecclesiarchy. They are fanatical when it comes to worship of the Emperor and spreading his word across the universe. Often singing hymns of their saviour as they charge into battle. Not only do they fight against the usual alien threats of the galaxy, but they also fight against internal threats of heresy.

They aren’t super genetically enhanced soldiers like the Space Marines. They are exceptionally-trained warrior women who have been pushed to the very limits of human endurance. They are armed with modified power armour and weapons of the Space Marines to aide them in delivering swift justice to the heretics and daemons of the galaxy... and they look awesome doing it.

What’s In The Box?

A Canoness leads the crusade against the unclean. Ten Battle Sisters make up the main force armed with bolters and chainswords for a nice balance of ranged and close combat. Five Seraphim keeps the skies clear for the ground troops. Four Sisters Repentia will charge into battle, sword in hands as they hope to regain the grace of the Emperor, kept in check by a fully armed Repentia Superior. Three Arco-flagellants will also charge in for close combat but are much less willing to do so as is the Penitent-Engine and it’s captive pilot. The Sororitas Rhino rounds out the box with some heavy ranged firepower to cover any assault.

This box is very thematic and a great demonstration of the Adepta Sororitas and their... ways. Not only do you get a good mix of troops in their iconic armour and robes. But the Penitent-Engine and Arco-flagellents show the torturous methods the Sisters use on human heretics. And the Sisters Repentia show the high standards each warrior is held to, what happens when they fail and how far each Sister will go when wanting to return to the “grace of the Emperor”.

As with most of the Combat Patrol boxes, the choice of tank is the weakest element. The Rhino is the most basic of tank of those available, although the Sister’s Rhino has lovely Sister iconography that helps it standout from others, but pales in comparison to the Sister’s Immolator, which is essentially a church organ with flamethrowers and treads.

Are They Difficult To Paint?

They may look similar to Space Marines, but these warriors are not as easy to paint. They’re smaller than their brethren so require extra brush control even when adding simple details. Each sister has a flowing cloak or robe that, on the surface, looks simple enough to cover, but to gain a smooth transition between light and dark will require patience and glazes.

That’s not to say the Sisters are too difficult to paint, but they certainly aren’t a beginner army. They’re better suited to someone looking for a second or third army with some experience who has the patience to do each detailed sculpt justice. They’re a lot of fun, but not in the same, slapdash approach you can take with Orks. I’ve just started painting the Adepta Sororitas alongside an Ork army and each individual Sister takes me longer than my Ork War Boss did. And the Sisters Repentia, Penitent-Engine and Arco-flagellants present a challenge of their own.
