Description

Rainbow Knights is a fast and frantic real-time card game in which players seek to play as many cards as possible within a pre-determined play area. Each card extends the player's path, but players' paths must not intersect. Once no more cards may be played within the designed area, the player who managed to lay the most cards wins!

Special "obstacle" cards may be laid within the play area to increase difficulty, and a turn-based variant is included for those who want a more strategic, less frantic game.

From Ninja Division comes a small family filler game packed with fast, fun rainbow races that leave colourful trails across the sky! Choose from six different characters and ready your steed, because with Rainbow Knights, it’s time to fly!

Components

Housed within this small but strong square box is a light rulebook, with rhyming introductions for all six Rainbow Knights, 96 Knight Cards (16 for each character), 10 Cloud Obstacle Cards, and four Corner Cloud Cards. All cards are made of transparent plastic, that can be wiped clean if played with sticky hands or encounter accidental spills.

Why not look for yourself inside the box with my unboxing video below:

Gameplay

Rainbow Knights is a 2-6 player game for children and adults alike. After choosing your favoured character, shuffle your 16 cards and place them in two piles in front of you. Take the four Corner cards and decide how big the play area should be. A bigger area for higher player counts is recommended. Place any number of Cloud Obstacle cards within the area to create extra challenges when racing. Each player then places their first card so the back edge of the card is aligned with the edge of play area.

The call “3… 2… 1…GO!” is made and the race is on! All racers play their cards as quickly as possible, all at the same time, in a frantic race, flying all over! But watch out! No one can cross another racer’s trail or hit any Cloud Obstacles. When all players are stuck and can not move without hitting someone or something the race is over, and victory is awarded to the player with the least cards left. If there is a tie, the tied players race again to determine the ultimate victor!

For younger players the game can be played in a more traditional turn based way, where racers take time to place their chosen card. This way certainly removes the frantic nature of the game but the fun, colourful artwork and the challenge of manoeuvring around obstacles and other players still brings joy and excitement. My five-year-old loved it!

Final Thoughts on Rainbow Knights

Rainbow Knights, although short, is full of fun! It’s a great filler game and the frantic, real-time play will keep most players entertained. It’s fun to try out the different characters and due to the shuffling and two card piles element that slows you down in finding the right one to place, the different placement and number of Cloud Obstacles and the choice in which size to have the play area, the replay-ability is certainly there.

The less frantic, turn-based variant is a great way of introducing younger players to the game, and helps all players to get used to the twists and turns of their cards. If you are looking for a family game that’s quick to play, easy to learn, has lovely cartoon art and is packed full of fun then look no further, Rainbow Knights is the game for you!
