Metro Domino London Review

Metro Domino London

All aboard and please "mind the gap" (even though the aim is to leave none, I bet you're now reciting this phrase in your mind now aren't you?), as you make your way around the iconic city of London in this new release. Metro Domino London Edition is a classic childhood game with a twist.

Metro Domino London Edition is a family friendly game for 2-4 players ages 10 years and up, published by Tactic where the aim of the game is to link as many stations around London as possible, using just Domino tiles. This simplistic and enjoyable title require both luck and strategic skill to play.

In The Box...

  • A pack of 55 domino tiles (double 9 Domino set)
  • x 1 Starting station
  •  x10 Station boards
  •  x 3 Active line tokens
  •  x 12 Metro tokens
  • x 20 Player tokens

How To Play

To begin your game, place the starting station facing up. Then this is where the fun begins! Each player is to then play in turn by placing the Dominoes tiles attached to the station in the exact same way in which a classic game of Dominoes would be played. The next tile has to display the same number as the end of the previous one in order to be placed.

However, there are a few rules that make this game a little different. This is where the twist on a classic game comes in, which makes Metro Domino that little more unique. Each station will specify just how many tiles are to be placed in order to link to the next station. For example, one station may show that only 5 tiles may be used in order to place the next station. Along the way, players can also earn Metro tokens which will help towards their final point score. These are won by placing a double tile within the train line. The game ends when the 5th station tile is opened, or when a player places their last tile.

Packaging And Artwork

Metro Domino London Edition is a release that actually has some really good quality artwork featured on it's components. The images depicted on the station tiles feature many iconic scenes from double decker buses to red phone boxes. One tile even shows the infamous London Eye lit up at night, which is situated on the South Bank of the River Thames, this was really nice to see. So this game would be great for people that are fascinated with London culture, or even tourists that would love a little memoir of a previous visit to the city with so much to offer.

The game's components are very well packed and neatly too. The metro car (the box that contains all of the Dominos tiles) is actually a really nice little addition which brings a 3D element to the look of the overall game. It isn't necessarily needed in play, but it's great to have on display, making it instantly Instagram worthy!

The Dominos tiles also have a touch of colour to them. They are of a traditional size and are ivory in colour, but rather than the dots which show the number value on the tiles being the simplistic black colour, they vary in multiple different colours and tones. It just a nice little inclusion to give the game that extra splash of colour to make it more appealing to the eye.

Quality

The components included are all of really high quality in my opinion, The tiles and tokens are all made of sturdy cardboard. It's highly unlikely that they will become damaged during play, unlike some games which feature cards for example than can be somewhat flimsy and can become easily creased or torn. So this isn't a concern that I have for Metro Domino London Edition, and you won't need to worry about heavy handed players potentially damaging the game's tiles and tokens.

The Dominoes tiles are also of very high quality, as mentioned above in the artwork section of this review, they have a splash of colour added to the traditional look and they are made of what I believe to be acrylic. It doesn't state this anywhere within the rulebook or it's information so this is just my guess. Although, no matter what material they are made from, you can rest easy knowing that they are of high quality and work well in play. And the best part of all, they are easy to store within the box so you won't need to worry about Domino tiles sliding around everywhere in the game's main box, making it rather noisy every time you decide to get the game out to play.

The box itself is also made of sturdy cardboard, not as densely as the tiles are, so be careful to look after it.

One Thing

Metro Domino London Edition is a simple yet enjoyable game. This section is really suggestions to the manufacturers and designers of the game of what I think could be improved.

As I have already mentioned, the components included are of really good quality, but I have one issue with them. Once the tokens and stations are all popped out of their cardboard frames, there is no where in particular to place them when it comes to packing the game away. They are laying loose in the box causing them to move around and could even lead to them getting lost.

Of course losing tokens can happen with board games anyway, but it would be nice to have a pouch or an actual insert for the box to be able to place the tiles and tokens into after the end of play to store them. Thankfully those little zip lock plastic bags that come with Lateral flow Covid home testing kits come in handy and are able to save the day in my home!
