Star Wars Dark Side Rising
Dark Side Rising is a reskin of popular co-op game Thanos Rising. Set instead in the Star Wars Universe it sees you are up to three other players take on Darth Vader and his plan to construct a ‘fully operational’ death star!
The game comes with a load of dice, cards, plastic cubes and an imposing Darth Vader bust. This totally appreciated by over the top component sits in the middle of a special board. This board has three sections each of which will have three cards dealt to it. The death star also has its own board with six separate pieces that act as the components that the sith lord is attempting to construct.
To start the game each player chooses a character card which dictates their leader and initial dice pool. At the start of each round players choose which of the three sections they want to interact with. Then Darth’s two dice are rolled and resolved. His first dice dictates whether he turns to face another section or not. The section he ends up facing has all villain cards activate and often attack. Any rebel cards that are in this section are also attacked, and finally any players who have placed their interaction token there are attacked too!
Next the death star dice indicates which section moves closer to completion. If a section is completed it is turned over with dire consequences for you and the other players. If all six are completed then you have lost!
Finally it is your turn to act. Take your dice pool roll them and assign at least one dice to one of the three cards in the section you chose. These dice are used to recruit or attack cards depending on their type. If you have assigned at least one dice you get to reroll the others until you run out of dice, can’t assign any or choose to stop. Play continues this way until you have defeated enough villains and won, or been defeated!
The game has a lot of luck in the dice rolling and card draw but is undoubtably a lot of fun as you try to manage threats on multiple fronts and prioritise the best corse of action. Easy enough for families but with enough on the bone for game groups too, definitely one to check out!
