Description

Mentor’s head hung low as he entered the room. There was a sadness in his voice when he spoke.

“Worthy companions, we must act fast. The Witch Lord is not dead! He has managed to find refuge in the fallen city of Kalos. Long ago, the city was destroyed by Morcar and given to the Witch Lord to rule. Beneath the ruins, the Witch Lord built for himself a great stronghold, for the light of day was too pure for his foul creatures to endure. Once the Witch Lord’s strength has fully returned, he will gather his army of the undead and attack the Empire. Only Heroes of great courage, or those with powerful magic, dare stand against him.”

HeroQuest: Return Of The Witch Lord Quest Pack

This Return of the Witch Lord quest pack is a great expansion of the base game of HeroQuest as it adds a whole lot of new content without taking away from the feel of the game and all that makes it what it is. The expansion comes with a big book of new quests for players to play and all the other features that are needed for those quests. You will need the base game to play this expansion though but can be played as a standalone playthrough when both have been acquired as they are easily able to be picked up and enjoyed at any time.

More Quests!

The quest book included within this expansion is packed with new content and interesting scenarios that add to the gameplay of HeroQuest in the best of ways. It comes with a whole 10 new quests to adventure through as well as all the storyline text needed for the DM to give a great experience to all playing, and all the information needed for all the new components that come alongside the quests such as the cards, and game board pieces. The quests are set up the same way that the base games are done so it’s easily learnt how the game works and how to arrange all the pieces along the board for all the new quests. From my own time playing Return of the Witch Lord, the quests do seem to be more difficult and more ramped up with the amount of enemies that are packed within them, but this is evened out by the vast amount of new features available to the players allowing them to survive the onslaught of enemies and to not be too overwhelmed by all of it.

More spells & potions!

Along with the quests comes more potions and spells to fill the players’ pockets with. The spells are used in the same way as the base game and can only be used once per quest and each gives their own special effect that will take place when used. These spells are different in one way though and it is that they can be found as scrolls instead of having them be given to specific players like the base game has them. This makes it more interesting as that allows anyone to be able to pick it up and use them, which could be more helpful to the players.

The potions are, however, fully a new feature to the Return of the Witch Lord expansion and they are cards that can be bought from the DM via an alchemist’s shop which will hold all of the potions, and each have their own effect and gold cost to use them. These can be helpful during the game and also give the players an incentive to collect more gold rather than just to be able to upgrade their weapons.

More Enemies

The Return of the With Lord expansion box is filled to the brim with new enemy miniatures which are used thoroughly throughout this expansion’s quests. These enemies are a mix of zombies and skeleton creatures, and they have their own health and damage like the other enemies in HeroQuest. They have lower health but have more of them laid out on the map at any one time and the box shows that with how many are packed into the box. If you’re a fan of having nice miniatures, I’d definitely suggest getting this Quest pack as well as the game itself as it’s a great way to have 2 hobbies of board games and miniature painting join together.

New Map Pieces

Even more packed into this tiny box!? I know! It keeps going but I promise this is the last part of this expansion to go through. The map pieces added to this game vary in size and meaning to the game. The biggest ones are the big room pieces which get placed over certain parts of the game board to create new rooms and designs for the game board. Some of the smaller pieces are just used as walls, secret passages and just decorations for the map. Some of them though, have their own effects such as traps that do damage to players or trigger enemies to spawn in.

Final thoughts

Overall, Return of the Witch Lord is a great addition to HeroQuest and adds a lot of new content to the game which makes it definitely worth the buy and adds a big handful of new features that makes it feel fresh and different to the base game.
