Seeking a means of escape, she begins working as a cleaner for a farmer (John Mills) who lives nearby. Though the farmer is known in the area as a recluse and a drunkard, he quickly becomes attached to Dulcima and the girl, who witnesses first-hand the amount of money stashed around the house, recognises an opportunity to escape her poverty through marriage.
