Yu-Gi-Oh! Toon Chaos Review

Toon Chaos Art

Released in June 2020 and following on from Fists of the Gadgets, Toon Chaos brings something for everyone. You will love this set if you’re an avid duellist, nostalgic collector, or keen watcher of the anime series. It's also great if you’re just starting to learn the game.

What are “Toon” and “Chaos” cards?

"Toon” is an archetype of cards used by Maximillion Pegasus, each Toon monster being a highly exaggerated cartoon caricature of a monster. Popular Toon cards include Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon, Red-Eyes Toon Dragon and Toon Dark Magician Girl.

"Chaos" and "Black Luster Soldier" are an archetype of monsters that effectively combine LIGHT and DARK. The most recognisable cards in this archetype include Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End, Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning and Chaos Sorcerer.

Collector’s Rare cards make their TCG debut

Collector’s Rare cards have arrived with a Toony twist! That’s right, for the very first time outside Asia, Toon Chaos debuts the long-awaited rarity with 15 Collector’s Rare cards to find in packs. It has the gorgeous appearance of a rainbow-coloured reflective pattern on the Attribute, Level, Artwork, Lore Box Border and Card Border.

The 15 Collector’s Rare cards are Toon Black Luster Soldier, Toon Harpie Lady, Toon Bookmark, Toon Page-Flip, The Chaos Creator, Chaos Daedalus, Chaos Valkyria, Chaos Space, Immortal Phoenix Gearfried, Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End, PSY-Framegear Gamma, Stardust Dragon, Pot of Desires, and Pot of Extravagance.

What’s included in a Yu-Gi-Oh! Toon Chaos Booster Box?

Each Toon Chaos Booster Box contains 24 booster packs, each pack containing 7 cards (6 Rares & 1 Foil). This is a fantastic opportunity to upgrade your commons to new rarities, with each pack guaranteeing no less than 6 Rares and 1 Foil card.

The complete Toon Chaos set is made up of 60 cards:

·         10 Ultra Rares

·         15 Super Rares

·         35 Rares

In addition, 15 cards in this set are also available as Collector’s Rares.

New Toon support

A welcome addition to the TCG is a collection of all-new Toon support. The powerful cover-card “Toon Black Luster Soldier” with ATK/30000 DEF/2500 can attack directly, same with the new “Toon Harpie Lady”. Both cards pop out of packs as Ultra Rares and in Collector’s Rare too.

Having trouble finding those Toon cards in duels? The archetype also receives a new Normal Spell, “Toon Bookmark” which allows players to search their deck for any card that mentions Toon World.

“Toon Page-Flip” is a new Quick-Play Spell with a fun effect: you pick out 3 different Toon monsters from your deck and your opponent randomly chooses one for you to special summon. Finally, it is also worth mentioning “Toon Terror”, a new Counter Trap that can negate any Monster/Spell/Trap effect and potentially destroy it, if you control Toon World and any Toon monster.

Let the chaos commence!

Toon Chaos also introduces new Chaos versions of older monsters. This includes “The Chaos Creator” which lets you target 3 of your banished monsters. This allows you to Special Summon one of them and return the other 2 to the bottom of your deck. “Chaos Daedalus” and “Chaos Valkyra” are other notable monster additions.

The new spell card “Chaos Space” is potentially the most effective Chaos support card to come out of Toon Chaos. Once per turn, it allows you to add a LIGHT/DARK monster to your hand (Level 4-8), place a banished card to the bottom of your deck AND draw 1 card.

FIRE Warriors and Geminis

A deadly duo has been imported from the OCG: “Infernoble Knight – Renaud” and “Infernoble Knight – Roland” help you retrieve FIRE monsters / Equip Spells from your deck and graveyard. Joining them in Toon Chaos are “Sublimation Knight” and “Evocator Eveque”, which provide support for Gemini cards.

Gearbreed is a new Continuous Spell and Gemini Ablation is a new Continuous Trap, both of which help retrieve or special summon FIRE Warriors & Gemini from your graveyard or deck.

Classic reprints

“Sangan” and “Witch of the Black Forest” are in the set as classic monsters used back in the day for their searching capabilities in Chaos plays. Well-loved Chaos-related cards also feature, including “Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning”, “Chaos Emperor Dragon – Envoy of the End”, “Envoy of Chaos” and “Chaos Zone”.

A raft of Masked HEROs such as Goka, Vapor, Acid, Dian, and Blast are also reprinted. In conjunction with the rise of popularity of Starlight Road, “Stardust Dragon” features as well. A couple of fantastic Pot cards get reprints; both “Pot of Desires” and “Pot of Extravagance”.

Final thoughts

All-in-all, Toon Chaos is an exciting set if you are collecting those Toon cards or run a competitive Chaos and Infernoble Knight deck. The new Toon cards including “Toon Black Luster Soldier” make solid additions to the deck, with “Toon Bookmark” and “Toon Page-Flip” making it easier to retrieve the cards you want.

The set overall is good value for money with zero commons. Each pack gives you a chance to upgrade your cards. Particularly with some nice reprints to find. The most attractive feature of Toon Chaos must be Collector’s Rare cards to the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG.
