Mmmmmm pie! Savoury or sweet, that crumbly hit of pastry combined with an unlimited number of delicious fillings is hard to beat (although I would hard swerve on four and twenty blackbirds!). And we Brits are big fans. From petrol station snack size to top tier crust creations, we go potty for pies! So what better way to celebrate this hearty dish than with some games to honour this tasty treat. And with a week-long celebration, there’s plenty of time to eat all the pies (and play all the games!)
Flamecraft
The Baker dragon in FLAMECRAFT looks hard at work, and I just know they have some delicious spicy pies cooking away in the oven. Along with other professional shopkeepers and artisans, the Baker will work hard for you. And whilst this game looks super cute, there’s a wee bit of heat in there. Light hand and resource management with some set collection and worker placement mechanics mix together with undeniably gorgeous artwork. With two main actions – visiting shops or enchanting them - the game won’t overwhelm. And the more you play, the more you’ll leverage the most out of each turn and the abilities you trigger. With this game, baking pies is almost as fun as eating them!
Brass Birmingham
Okay so pies don’t feature directly in BRASS BIRMINGHAM. But as a Northern import, I now know how much value is placed on good pastry. And this increases exponentially the further way from the M25 you get! So a game set in the East Midlands is heading into glossy gravy territory. A reimplementation of Brass Lancashire (a place which appreciates pies even more, I have no doubt), this game is a mid-heavyweight economic euro-style, resource management game from Martin Wallace. Incorporating many well recognised mechanisms, this is a game to settle into with a hearty chuck of crust on your plate! And what goe great with pie? Beer! And ale is big business in Brass Birmingham, so be sure to use your money, factories, and network wisely.
Sweet Mess: Pastry Competition (2024)
I love it when they make pies in tv cooking competitions. They are always so decadent, and the chefs seem to use every single tool and receptacle in the kitchen. Elevety billion ingredients and bowls, the end product is worth the kitchen chaos. And SWEET MESS PASTRY COMPETITION is no different.
This is a board game bake-off, and the kitchen is carnage! Action-activation, resource management, and set collection are blended together to turn ingredients into tasty dishes. The more you bake, the more skills you acquire, and the more VPs you earn. With bonus points up for grabs, this will satisfy your sweet and savoury tastes! There’s also a deluxe edition that will make your bakes look even more impressive – vie with pie to be crowned star baker!
Diced Veggies
Pastry or potato topped, sweet and savoury. The recipes in DICED VEGGIES are definitely pro pie! And what’s really cool is that Diced Veggies has you using a cleaver to carve up dice representing delicious ingredients. Those ingredients can then be used to cook delicious dishes for points. But the kicker is that you can only select dice from the edge, and then the combined value cannot exceed the maximum! As well as dishes to prepare, you can pick Hypes to boost the value of your recipes. but if you’re really stuck, there are some handy Chef Tokens to help manipulate the dice values or types for maximum scoring potential. This game makes me so hungry!
Pie Town
We couldn’t do a blog about pies without featuring PIE TOWN – it’s literally in the name! And why wouldn’t we given that this place is built on and filled with the heady scent of apples and butter! But it’s not all sweetness and light – worker placement using dice is swirled together with hidden information. And like the real world, those workers are always changing. So it’s down to you to manage your own pie business whilst trying to work out what your rivals are cooking up! But don’t forget that you also have your own sweet secrets to keep!
Trivial Pursuit Family Edition
Okay so this game doesn’t really feature pies (there maybe a pastry related question amongst the 2,400 in the game but we’ can’t say for sure. But when the iconic “cheeses” are placed together, they always remind me of a pie. And perhaps more pie chart than pastry based, there’s a link and I’m sticking with it! Haha This game has been around for years, and for many of my generation came to represent Christmas and other family gatherings. We even had cards from the game on the tables at our wedding. And now the Family Edition has had a re-vamp with a whole host of new questions and a 2 player showdown. Still based on 6 different categories of general knowledge (Geography, Entertainment, History, Sports and Leisure, Arts and Literature, and Science and Nature), players of all ages will be competing to earn a wedge in each one!
Well we are now craving pie and a whole host of gooey gaming goodness! We hope you enjoy celebrating Pie Week with a tasty tea and some hearty games!
