It’s been a glorious decade and a half for Ticket to Ride. Alan R. Moon’s 2004 Spiel des Jahres winner has expanded into a world-wide phenomenon. What started off as a trans-American adventure has become so much more, with multiple map collections and spin-offs. Days of Wonder is hence celebrating the series’ roots this year with a stunning 15th anniversary edition.
Ticket to Ride - 15th Anniversary
This edition is based on the original Ticket to Ride and includes several exclusive additions. The most noteworthy addition is the switch to translucent trains. Fantasy Flight’s recent Cosmic Encounter 42nd Anniversary Edition adopted similar translucent ships, and it’s a fantastic incentive. The card borders and backs have also been updated and are now much clearer and vibrant. You’ll still need the USA 1910 expansion for larger card sizes, but that’s not a glaring issue.
The box art has also been blessed with new graphics to help it stand out. The cover boasts the tagline ‘The Most Famous Train Game’; deserved after 15 years of being an industry forerunner. Also included is a booklet offering a retrospective of the game’s creation and history.
It’s not yet known how many copies will be produced. Nor do we know if this edition replaces the original Ticket to Ride. The game received a limited print run for its 10th Anniversary edition and is sadly hard to find. This edition included a larger board along with detailed plastic trains and tins to contain them.
The 15th Anniversary Edition will be released on August 9 in the US. The European release date hasn’t been confirmed, however it's expected to be around the same time period. To avoid disappointment, be sure to keep an eye on it as more is revealed.
Each map collection will also be compatible if you’re looking to expand. The UK and Pennsylvania collection is particularly fantastic and offers challenging gameplay. Otherwise, you won’t be disappointed with the aforementioned USA 1910 expansion. Along with larger cards, this expansion includes extra routes and variants to create new game experiences.
