Sonic’s 30th Anniversary Livestream Round-Up

sonic 30th anniversary

In the blink of an eye, Sonic's 30th-anniversary live stream has come and gone. Sure, it wasn’t full of mind-blowing reveals as other anniversary streams have been this year. But Sega did confirm the long-rumoured Sonic Colors remaster and a retro Sonic collection are on the way. They also teased Sonic’s next major game - here’s hoping they keep human love interests out of it.

What Was Announced?

The remaster - called Sonic Colors Ultimate - will be heading to PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC on 7th September. For those that don’t know, it transports the iconic spiky blue boy to Dr Robotnik’s interstellar theme park. It has a healthy dose of high-speed platforming as well as a couple of new tricks for Sonic thanks to things called Wisps.

Sonic Colors Ultimate is being produced by Blind Squirrel Entertainment. They recently worked on BioWare’s Mass Effect Legendary Edition (which everyone really needs to buy). It’ll have upscaled visuals, refined controls, and a new Rival Rush mode, which will see Sega’s mascot going up against Metal Sonic to unlock rewards.

For the hardcore hedgehog-lovers, there will be a two-part animated short, titled Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps. Set to release before the game, which will tie into the game’s lore.

Sonic’s latest retro compilation is called Sonic Origins. It’ll include Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3, Sonic & Knuckles, and the awesome Sonic CD, (I can hear the sound bytes of “Past” and “Future” just thinking about it). Sega says to expect “added content and features” with more information coming later this year.

Heads or Tails

There were also a number of smaller announcements as part of its 30th-anniversary live stream. Including free Sonic-themed cosmetics for Two Point Hospital (another game everyone should play) on 22nd June. Plus the addition of a Sonic: The Fighters (yep, Sonic had a fighting game) arcade cabinet in Yakuza spin-off Lost Judgment on 24th September. The stream came to a close with one last tease.

Sonic Team’s next big (currently untitled) Sonic game. Coming to Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC in 2022. There was only an extremely short trailer that didn’t show anything beyond the hedgehog running through a forest. Hopefully, Sega won’t make us wait for ages for more information.
