Are you a die – hard fan of Yu-Gi-Oh? Well then you must know about the Ghosts of the Past sets they do, right? The 2022 version, as always brings new and improved foil sets and opportunities you wouldn’t want to lose out on as a fan!

The second Ghosts From the Past set was released in April 2022 and is the follow-up to last Spring’s phenomenon, Ghosts From the Past! It’s got more of everything that made Ghosts From the Past a smash hit, including even more Ghost Rares!

It’s not just the roster of Ghost Rares that’s expanded either – the drop rate has, too, so it’s twice as easy to pull a Ghost Rare this time around! On top of that, each box of the next Ghosts From the Past set as 4 packs instead of 3, giving you even more cards per box!

The set size has also expanded to pack in even more cool cards! From new anime-inspired cards like Crystal Beast Rainbow Dragon and Decode Talker Heatsoul to a second chance to grab tournament mainstays like Crystron Halqifibrax and Number 97: Draglubion, you’re sure to find something that can power up your current Deck or inspire your next Deck!

You can add some extra punch to your Floowandereeze Deck with Raiza the Mega Monarch, pair up your Structure Deck: Albaz Strike with Aluber the Jester of Despia, and even show the world your D/D/D Deck means business with Go! – D/D/D Divine Zero King Rage! Fans of Yu-Gi-Oh! history will even get another chance to grab some fun old-school Fusion Monsters like Sanwitch and Rare Fish!

2022’s version of Ghosts From the Past is another all-foil set, and each 5-card pack comes with 5 Ultra Rares, 1 of which could be replaced by a Ghost Rare. Each box of the upcoming Ghosts From the Past comes with 4 packs, for a total of 20 cards per box.

Who’s there? Have you heard that sound? For those who know me, I am quite a scaredy-cat when it comes to ghosts and horror movie but I made a huge exception for YuGiOh! Ghosts From the Past: The 2nd Haunting. In this case, I really wanted to see a Ghost (or more if possible).

Ghosts From The Past is an all-foil booster set made up entirely by ultra rare cards. Moreover it also includes a few Ghost Rare cards of some all time favourites. For those who don’t know,  Ghost cards are Ultra Rare card with a 3D holographic image where colours have been dimmed giving an overall pale, ghost-like appearance.

The first release of this series came in 2021 and it was a great success. Now, Konami has released a second set of  Ghosts From The Past (hence the “2nd haunting”) that seems even better than the previous one.  First of all, each box of the new release comes with four 5-card booster packs instead of three giving us a total of 20 cards in each box. The box itself, as usual, is very appealing and it is a pleasure to open it. The card list is also much larger (183 cards instead of 132) and there are more Ghost Rare (9 instead of 5) increasing a lot the pull rate for those rare cards.

Ghost Rares

Among the 183 cards of the 2nd Haunting, there are more tournament relevant cards than in the 2021 set. There are also as usual some foil upgrades and a few new cards. These last ones include powerful new monsters like Crystal Beast Rainbow Dragon, Decode Talker Heatsoul, and Borrelend Dragon.

Obviously the stars of this deck are the Ghost Rare cards. The 2022 release seems to have more of a classic feeling and to be linked to the Duel Monsters era. Among the 9 Ghost Rares we see Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Red-Eyes Black Dragon, Dark Magician Girl, The Winged Dragon of Ra – Sphere Mode, Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, and The Eye of Timaeus. This last one is the second Spell Card to get the ghost foiling overall.

The last three Ghosts cards are all dragons: Cyber Dragon, Dark Armed Dragon and Red Dragon Archfiend. The first two are among the most iconic competitive cards from the GW era.

Booster Set Ultra-Rare cards

As mentioned above, there are 174 non-Ghosts cards in the 2022 Ghost From The Past release. The list includes the missing cards to allow to complete the Legendary Gold Box, new supports for The Agent archetype, some new Fossil cards and rides and some Infernity cards.

There are too many cards in the deck for a short proper review but it is worth mentioning some examples of the new cards to have a taste of the additions:

  • Crystal Beast Rainbow Dragon is a levee 8 crystal beast that could special summon itself from player’s hand once an attack is declared. It also acts as a Continuous Spell once destroyed and it could be used to search or special summon a Crystal Beast.
  • Decode Talker Heatsoul needs 2+ monsters with different Attributes to summon. Once summoned, he gains 500 ATK for each monster it points. He also has a Quick Effect to let you pay 1000 life points to draw a card. Finally, if your LP are 2000 or less, you can  banish this card from the field to summon a Link-3 or lower Cyberse from your Extra Deck that isn’t another Heatsoul.
  • Borrelend Dragon cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects and could not be targeted by monster effects. This nice dragon could instead attack all monsters the opponent controls, one time each turn. Furthermore, it has a quick effect to target a monster on the field and a Rokket in the graveyard to negate the effects of the monster on the field and summon the Rokket from the graveyard.

Please note: the above are just a few examples as there are quite a few new cards in this deck.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I think the 2022 release of Yu-Gi-Oh: Ghosts From the Past is a good set to open. Konami seems to have listened to some of the frustration from the 2021 set and they came up with a well made upgrade for this year’s Ghosts From the Past. The improved pull frequency of the Ghost Rare cards is definitely the main aspect that makes this set worth getting.

The re-print choices this year also feel much better and I see a lot of the cards among the 183 that could be a great addition to many collections. In particular, the set is very much needed if you are looking to finish up the Legendary Gold Box cards from Japan.

Personally, I got a few from the very first box I opened that I am quite thankful for and I am very looking forward to open more.
