Sleeping Queens is an excellent set-collecting and card-laying game. It was created by Miranda Evarts, as a six-year-old and her family. It has been in production by Gamewright games since 2005. Gamewright saw the potential of this lovely game and have been publishing it ever since. Like some other titles in their catalogue, the Tenth Anniversary Edition comes in a lovely presentation tin, complete with new queens and special stickers! The game will fit nicely alongside other Gamewright titles such as Forbidden Desert and Forbidden Island.

In this edition of Sleeping Queens, players aim to wake a number of sleeping queens. Each Queen has their own personality and quirky nature. The Pancake Queen has a particularly fetching edible outfit. The Dog Queen could be mistaken for a poodle and the Cat Queen certainly shows where her affections lie. Players lay cards from their hand drawing back to five at the end of their turn. These queens may be woken by playing a king card from the hand. Similar to the Queens, the Kings also have a life and personality. Children are sure to love the Cookie King with his half-eaten biscuit for a hat. As with any fairy tale there are Knights who might steal your Queens, Dragons to fight off the marauding knights, a sleeping potion or even a fairy spell to counter its effects. Most of the cards are simple number cards but these can only be exchanged if they are laid to form a mathematical equation. For example, the two, three and five cards could be played by stating “2 + 3 = 5”. By exchanging these “blocking” cards players hope to collect more useful King Cards to awaken the Queens.

The card art has a humour and lightness about them. Each Queen and King has their own personality that is certain to appeal to children. With some number skills required, educational and fun is a great way to describe this superb card game. Coupled with a deluxe presentation tin, the Tenth Anniversary Edition makes an excellent gift for children.
