Blank is a fast, simple, family-friendly party game with the objective of the game being the first person to get rid off all their cards.
The game, published by Hub Games, is named blank as it allows you to customise your game as you play, by writing your own rules in addition to the predefined rules also you are able to write your own cards with special affects which allows you true control over the game and its material / content.
The game is a mix between Fluxx and standard card games, plays two to six players and is suitable for those aged six and over. You will see six suits of cards which are coloured and have unique shapes to allow you to identify the card. They're great for anyone who is colour blind, the suits are red hexagon, orange triangle, green square, blue circle, purple diamond and pink shield.
Blank comes with 72 cards, 36 of which are blank. This allows you to customise your game by adding cards affects. You also get 38 rule cards, 14 of which have basic rules with 24 blank rules for you to customise.
To set-up the game; separate the rule cards from the game cards and then shuffle the game cards. Deal each player seven cards and turn one card over in the middle of the playing surface, placing the remaining game card deck in the centre of the table - easily reachable by all parties. Shuffle the rule cards and lay out three rules, these rules must be followed throughout the game. The last person or the person who does not fulfil the rule will receive a penalty which is one card.
The gameplay in Blank is very simple. First, select the player who will start the game - the game suggests the youngest player goes first or you can use a random player generator app which you can download from the app store, or roll a dice and the highest dice roll wins. Each player can play any number of cards provided they either match the number or colour of the card which was last played by the previous player, if you are unable to play a card you must draw one from the deck adding to it to you hand.
The first person to get rid of all their cards wins, but watch out for people breaking the rules and missing their ques!! Below is a list of the triggers which will result in a penalty:
- If you play a card out of turn, take it back to your hand and take a card from the draw pile.
- If you falsely accuse another player take a card from the draw pile as a penalty.
- If you play a card which doesn’t match the colour or number take a penalty.
- If you fail to follow a rule take a penalty.
- If you play more than one card which doesn’t share the same colour or number take all the cards back and yep you guessed it take a penalty.
Blank is a fun party game that is great for families and groups alike, and you can make the game as comical as you wish. One card my game set has is that the player you choose must speak in a foreign accent for the rest of the game or another is the player you choose must roar like a T-Rex and hold there cards like a T-Rex for the rest of the game.
Final Thoughts on Blank
Blank is a fun, jovial game designed to make you laugh. I would highly recommend this game to families and groups of people who like to play more jovial games, which don’t require much strategy or methodical planning.
If you are going to be playing this game to its full potential by using the blank cards, I would recommend purchasing card sleeves to protect them from being damaged when shuffling and bending, I would also recommend when writing on the card to use a ball point pen, try to avoid pens such as fountain pens as the cards do have a glossy finish and the text can smudge, so do be careful to let the text dry and place a card sleeves over the card after five to 10 minutes to protect the card moving forward and prevent text being corrupted.
One of the standard game cards has a special affect where the player with the lowest number of card in two minutes wins the game, so ensure you carry a phone or stopwatch, smart watch or other device which allows you to measure this time frame easily.
