Alubari: A Nice Cup of Tea
Alubari: A Nice Cup of Tea started life as an expansion to Snowdonia, but soon took a life of its own. During the game you will be assisting in the building of the railway lines and the transporting of tea, using worker placement to select your actions. Fans of Snowdonia will feel at home for sure.
Set in and around the municipality of Darjeeling, players will help building the Darjeeling and Himalayan Railway, while also growing and harvesting from their own tea estates. Harvested tea can be used to make Chai, which can then be given to workers to boost their actions!
Over the course of the game you will also pick up contract cards, which can also be used to gain bonus actions and give end game scoring bonuses. The back of these cards also gives you the weather forecast for the next three rounds. Weather has a fairly significant effect on the strength of some of your actions but is managed and in a smooth fashion.
Various tracks on the board show game information in highly visible ways. The most interesting of these is the work rate tracks which she how effecting workers will be at harvesting tea, excavating rubble and laying track. Obviously you want to take these actions at the optimal times for you while making other players use the less effective work rates.
Designer Tony Boydell is a master at these Snowdonia games, from the two player Foothills to the various Snowdonia expansions, the gameplay is solid, and steeped in railway history. Whether that history floats your boat or not the gameplay is so strong that you will find a lot of rewarding decision space within Alubari!
