Since its release in 2013, Gravwell: Escape from the 9th Dimension has taken the classic race game format and gone supernova. As important as they are, simple roll-and-move games do lack the ‘zhuzh’ that comes with more complex, fantasy games, like Gloomhaven or Twilight Imperium. That’s why Gravwell’s twist on this genre has made it so enjoyable to play. Players must draft fuel cards. Allowing them to move towards to away from the nearest ships. This is done whilst they attempt to escape the singularity and make it back to their own dimension. This may sound simple enough, but if your nearest ship is behind you, you may just find yourself shooting back right back to the start.
Earlier this year, Gravwell’s publishers Renegade Game Studios (publishers of Power Rangers: Heroes of the Grid) announced that this interstellar game was getting a second edition, and I just had to take a look.
Fans of the original will be pleased to hear that nothing too substantial has been changed from the first edition, but what has changed looks like it will be a welcome improvement. To give the game a facelift, Renegade has brought in Kwanchi Moriya, one of the artists working on Dinosaur World. Just looking at the new box has me excited to see what Renegade have in store for us. The second edition also expands the player count up to six, as well as adding a new mechanic of giving unique player abilities to the ships, which have all been redone and now have their own unique designs.
With all that’s being added, I am hopeful that Gravwell’s second edition will breathe new life into the roll-and-move genre of board games and I think it will be a game that everyone can enjoy, regardless of their level of experience. After all, the dream of becoming an astronaut doesn’t have an age limit.
