Mr Lister’s Quiz Shootout is part of a series of games from Big Potato Games. They specialise in fun party games for kids and adults alike.
Gameplay
The publisher says that Mr Lister’s Quiz Shootout is suitable for three players and over, so we gave it a go as a family to see how it worked. The rules seem fairly simple but, in our rush to get started with the questions, we missed the rules regarding the point scoring and had to go back to read them again.
Us grownups started by pitting ourselves against each other with our daughter as the Quizmaster; Mr Lister (complete with comedy moustache). You are asked a question which involves you compiling a list.
You have three attempts each to get the answers. If you get a rare answer – think of the game show Pointless – you automatically score three. Your opponent then needs to get three cards right or match you with a rare answer. The person with the most points wins the card. If the score is equal there is a tie-breaker question.
The questions remind me of Family Fortunes in that you end up shouting at the card (rather than the TV) saying ‘who did they ask these questions too!’ Often, the ‘top 10’ lists are contentious, but I think that makes it part of the fun.
Each one of the cards has a drink on the back. The winner of the game is the person with five different drink cards.
To add extra excitement to the game, if you collect two drinks the same you can then get Mr Lister (Mr Moustache) to confiscate a drink from the other team. If you get three drinks the same, you can swap them with Mr Lister for a drink of your choice.
Components
Well, it’s a quality moustache! That aside there are not many components in Mr Lister's Quiz Shootout. Providing a pencil would be useful in case you are away from home when you decide to play it. There are plenty of cards to keep you going.
Replay Value
It will take a while to get through the 120 cards. I feel that after you have got through the cards you would need to take a break to forget the answers to the questions again. I don’t think it would take long as there are so many variables.
Interaction and Engagement
Due to some moments of disbelief at the answers, we were quite kind to each other and tended to be fairly lenient with the exact words on the card. There is plenty of engagement in Mr Lister's Quiz Shootout as there is lots of chatting throughout. Our daughter was practising her best quiz master voice. We did then swap around so that she had a go at some of the answers. Like us she found some very tricky but there was a good range to suit all ages.
Final Thoughts on Mr Lister's Quiz Shootout
We decided to ditch the moustache – The wearing of this is probably funnier if you are playing in a big group or have had a few drinks.
We really enjoyed playing Mr Lister’s Quiz Shootout and I can see us playing this on car journeys to keep us entertained. In this case I think we would end up doing away with the scoring and the drink collecting. Otherwise we would want to play it with a larger group so that we could have teams. We are definitely planning to try it at the next family gathering.
