WHO IS MICHAEL KIESLING?

Michael Kiesling is a German board game designer from Bremen. Many of his board games have been co-designed alongside Wolfgang Kramer. Back in the day, Kramer and Michael Kiesling worked on games together by telephone and fax correspondence despite never having met.

Both Tikal and Torres (co-designed by the duo) are winners of the Spiel des Jahres Award - in 1999 and 2000. Tikal also won the Deutcher Spiele Preis Award in 1999. Kiesling has also won the award with Azul (2018), a game he designed on his own.

Alongside his board game activity, Kielsing is also a manager of a software company in Bremen.

DID YOU KNOW?

Three of Michael Kiesling's board games have won the prestigious Spiel des Jahres Awards. He won back-to-back awards between 1999 and 2000, with Tikal and Torres scooping those awards. His last Spiel des Jahres was in 2018, for the abstract tile-laying game, Azul. Kiesling has also won the Deutcher Spiele Preis and the Multi-player Category within the International Gamers Awards.

POPULAR MICHAEL KIESLING GAMES

AZUL

As a tile-laying artist in the game Azul, you have been challenged to embellish the walls of the Royal Palace of Evora. Players take turns drafting coloured tiles from suppliers to their player board. Later in the round, players score points based on how they've placed their tiles to decorate the palace.

RIVERBOAT

In Riverboat players take on the role of farm owners on 19th century farms on the banks of the Mississippi River. You need to organise your workers to ensure that the fields are ordered according to their type and harvested when ready so that the goods can be shipped to New Orleans. Each game will last four rounds.

TIKAL

In this game, each player is the director of an expedition intent on exploring Tikal in search of the secret paths that lead to the temples and precious treasures that have remained hidden for over 1000 years. Tikal won the prestigious Spiel des Jahres Award in 1999, and is co-designed by Wolfgang Kramer.

TORRES

Torres is an abstract game of resource management and tactical pawn movement. Players are attempting to build up castles and position their knights to score the most points each turn. This game won the Spiel des Jahres Award in 2000, and is co-designed by Wolfgang Kramer. Will you be a successful castle builder?

HEAVEN & ALE

In Heaven & Ale you have been assigned to lead an ancient monastery and its brewery. Now it’s your time to brew the best beer under God’s blue sky! In order to get the best results of your production, you have to provide your cloister’s garden with fertile resources and the right number of monks helping with the harvest.

VIKINGS

Vikings is a fast economic game set within the Dark Ages. In each round, a random set of 12 tiles and 12 meeples becomes available and players will take turns buying and placing pairs of meeples and tiles.  There is no direct player interaction, only indirect contention for resources during the buying phase.

STAINED GLASS OF SINTRA

The sequel to the award-winning Azul. Stained Glass of Sintra maintains some of the core tile drafting mechanisms of Azul, but introduces new tile-laying techniques and a new theme. players are challenged to select colourful glass panes to adorn the windows of the chapel of the Palace of Sintra in Portugal.

MEXICA

In Mexica, players try to divide the land and build temples. At the beginning of the game, there is one big landmass. Over the course of the game, players build canals and bridges, as well as 3D resin temples in four different heights. Players score points when they close an area of a certain number of spaces as depicted on tokens.

ADVENTURE LAND

In Adventure Land, King Agamis rules from his castle. Rich cities, vast forests and rugged mountain ranges dominate the country. The large river is known to be lined with gold and the forests filled with medicinal herbs, but dangers lurk beneath the fog! Only the bravest adventurers dare to face the challenges.
