Final Fantasy VII 25th Anniversary Stream Recap

final fantasy VII livestream feature image

Doesn’t time fly! Seems like only yesterday I was standing in HMV playing a demo of Final Fantasy VII on the first PlayStation. But it wasn’t yesterday, I was 15 then and now I’m middle-aged. The graphics and cutscenes that blew me away back then are now... of their time. But that doesn’t mean Final Fantasy VII isn’t an iconic title, I mean, they gave it a 25th-anniversary stream, so it clearly is! And, as I keep telling people, it’s my all-time favourite game and I play it every year. So, needless to say, I was excited for this stream and hopeful they would announce the second part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake. And they did!

The second game in the Final Fantasy VII remake project has been officially revealed and it’s called Final Fantasy VII Rebirth!

What Happened?

The short teaser showed Cloud and Sephiroth having a bit of a walk through a revamped Nibelheim trail to the mountain town’s Mako reactor. All the while a voiceover from Aerith mentions a pivotal and heartbreaking event that happened in the original game, which may or may not happen in the remake... or both. If you haven’t played Final Fantasy VII Remake that probably doesn’t make much sense and, sadly, my word count limit isn’t enough to explain. Just go buy and play the game.

In some very welcome news, Kitase announced that the remake series will be a trilogy. Comprising of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and one final title. Which means, unlike the Kingdom Hearts saga, I’ll be alive to see the end. Rebirth will launch winter 2023 exclusively on PlayStation 5.

Also announced was Crisis Core - Final Fantasy VII - Reunion. A prequel to Final Fantasy VII which focuses on Zack Fair. It’s a full remaster of the PSP original and will bring the game and its story up-to-date for modern platforms. It launches this Winter on PlayStation4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

Final Thoughts

Square Enix also announced a bunch of new merchandise and some updates on their Final Fantasy VII mobile games. To be honest, I didn’t really pay attention to those bits, I just waited for the stream to end so I could watch the Rebirth and Crisis Core trailers again.
