Last week has been an amazing week for Disney Lorcana with tons of previews and announcements coming up one after the other. For those who missed it, it all started with the team at Ravensburger releasing the first visuals of Archazia's Island products during the London Toy fair. Among them, the main surprise was the first picture of Archazia, the mysterious character that seems to have been created specifically for the mystical realm of Lorcana. Apart from revealing the features of Archazia, the artwork we saw in London also showed a few characters in the background that ignited a lot of excitement across social media. Most of the excitement revolved around a small picture of what we all thought was Mushu... it has now been now clearly confirmed that our most loved guardian spirit is finally coming to Disney Lorcana. No card has been showed yet, but Mushu was depicted on the Ruby card spacer of the trove and I am quite excited to see how this Dragon will work with all the Ruby Mulan cards.
Among the new products on display at the Ravensburger stand of the Toy Fair in London, there was actually one that went almost unnoticed to many: a new set of Disney Lorcana 1000-pieces puzzles. Ravensburger puzzles are very well known for their quality and amazing artwork and their catalogue already includes some really nice Disney themed ones. However, this is a slightly different product as it will be made specifically for Disney Lorcana and, most important, each puzzle will include a special Promo card. Unfortunately, the artwork of these puzzle was not available yet to be seen but the team confirmed there will be one puzzle per Ink colour and I am sure they will look amazing hanging on the wall of your gaming room or at your locals.
As the excitement after the news from the Fair wasn't enough already to keep all of us on our toes, the team at Ravensburger decided to raise the bar even more by confirming dual Ink cards are coming to Disney Lorcana! I know a lot of us bet on this change since learning that in Archazia's Islands, “glimmers will learn new tricks” and I am pretty excited to see how this will develop. The first two of these cards revealed so far are both featured in the Ruby/Sapphire starter deck and they are clearly designed to support this meta relevant deck. “Belle, Mechanic Extraordinaire” is a 9 cost, Shift 7 card with 7 Strength and 7 Willpower. Her first ability, “Salvage” allows the player to reduce Belle's shift cost for each item in their discard pile. However, her second ability allows the player to re-shuffle up to 3 items from the discard into the deck to gain 1 lore for each of them when Belle quests. This is both quite handy in a item driven deck but also a good way to balance Belle by depleting the items in the discard. Unfortunately, part of the new “Beast, Frustrated Designer” was not visible in the pictures released and his ability read as “Exert, 2 Ink, Banish 2.... Deal 5 damage to chosen character”. I think most of us think this card will likely work in tandem with Belle by sending items to the discard pile in order to deal damage but we will need to wait for the 10th of February to see if Beast ability actually banish items or not.
Together with cards with dual Ink colour cards, we also saw the first cards with a new keyword “Illusion”. “Iago, Giant Spectral Parrot” is the first one of these. Basing on this card, it seems all illusions will have the ability “Vanish” that will send them to the discard pile when an opponent chooses the illusion as the target for an action (including songs). We will need to wait for the full ruling to understand how this new mechanics work exactly, but we already know that “Jafar, Newly Crowned” will get along perfectly with the illusions. In fact his ability “This is not done Yet” is designed to bring any illusion back to hand instead of sending them to the discard. Perfect ability for the most powerful Sorcerer of Lorcana!
Finally, there will be more changes coming to the organized playing and to related support. As a start, all new sets from the Reign of Jafar included will release locally one week before they will be available for online purchase. Furthermore, there will be promo cards to be obtained when buying a box locally and support to pre-release events and pack-rush challenges.
Set Championship will also be improved with the addition of non-foil promo cards to be handed over to all participants to the event. The artwork on these card will be the same of the Enchanted card gifted to the top 8 so that everyone will be able to enjoy these artworks even if they arrive last. Unfortunately, the playing mat for the runner-up will no longer be available. I know this change may not please everyone but I appreciate that Ravensburger continue to work towards making this game enjoyable for everyone, disregarding their age and experience.
To support all these organized gameplay events, Lorcana will soon move into the newly released “Ravensburger Play Hub”. This will take over from Melee after Archazia's Island events and it seem that the League format will also benefit from it with the introduction of Store Leaderboards. I am sure we will learn more about these changes at a later date but I love the way Ravensburger keeps working to support the community at different levels!
