Cryptid is a simple game recommended for 3-5 players aged 13+. The goal of the game is to find the only hexagon space on the board where the Cryptid lives. Some friends had played it at a games cafe and I thought it looked and sounded fun - it is! It’s based on a simple premise but quite tricky to win (well I found that!).
The game consists of 6 shaped board tiles made up of coloured hexigans. These are laid out slightly differently per game depending on the card chosen. Each player receives a Club Book (or the same information can be accessed via the Companion app). We used the books. You have to decide whether you want to play the normal or advanced game. We played normal. In the Clue Books each player looks up their clue for that game - it may be something positive like ’the habitat is within…’ or something negative like ’the habitat is not…’. Each player reads their own individual clue from their clue book and the game begins.
On a player’s turn they either ask another player a question or search a space on the board. The player will then place a cube or disc of their colour on the space - cubes mean the space could not be the Cryptid’s habitat, disc means it could be.
I love playing board games and don’t mind if I don’t win, good thing really as my sons are both Maths’ whizzes and I think this helped them win. I enjoyed the way the game is designed, the art work is brilliant, I liked the idea and how its played. Although simple it does involve thinking through the clues you know and how others have helped you work out other things. It probably took us 40+ minutes to play the first time as none of us had played before. After that we had a quicker set up and the game took 30+ minutes.
We enjoyed it very much. It’s a great idea, different to building a city or an army but trying to find the one space the Cryptid could live on. I’d recommended it to anyone!
